5 Ways to Improve Your Child’s Brain Health

Trying to get your child motivated and focused on schoolwork can be frustrating and taxing for a parent. Many parents find themselves in uncharted territory with children starting school online. I am in the same boat. I get it!

Your child may be struggling to stay focused in the “new” school environment with all the distractions. And even if your child is used to schooling at home before this time, the world is full of distractions from its ever-changing state right now.

As school starts up for 2020-2021 year, there is plenty of time to prepare… helping and setting your child up for a strong start to the school year.

EXERCISE-Not only does exercise help keep the body physically fit, but it helps keep the brain fit too! Exercise promotes circulation to the blood in the brain which increases focus, attention span and alertness.

SELF-TALK- Talking and thinking negatively about ourselves can change the pathways in our brain. It can create depression and low self-esteem. Each day we need reminders to be our own best friends. Make sure your child is speaking to themselves as they would speak to someone they love.

PEPPERMINT OIL- Concentration and focus are two main areas that many children struggle with. Diffusing or smelling peppermint oil instantly stimulates the brain to help combat both of these issues.

SLEEP- During sleep, the body and the brain need to reset. Making sure the optimal amount of quality sleep is achieved each night can make all the difference in the brain’s ability to learn and retain information.

WATER- The brain is made up of more than 70% water. The first thing to suffer when dehydrated is the brain causing symptoms such as fatigue, brain fog, and lack of focus. Encourage sipping on water throughout the day.

These 5 things that sound so simple can be absolute GAME CHANGERS for your child, and let’s face it, for you too!

Start with one area to focus on and ramp up your game. When you feel like you have created better habits for your child, start with another area. Helping your child slowly, step by step will ensure success. Not only will it help them right now, but it will set them up for success for the next school year. So, go slow! Try something new!  Make healthy choices, and above all, be kind to yourself! You are doing an amazing job!
